God’s Revelation of Himself

matthew2646

One of the most marvelous of God's works is His revelation to us. That He does reveal Himself is a wonderful thing. He is sufficient unto Himself, has no need of anyone or anything besides Himself, and yet chooses to reveal Himself in all the works of His hands and to us also.

Even more wonderful is the fact that God reveals Himself to us. We are only creatures, the work of His hands, less than dust before Him. He is the Almighty, the infinite and eternal God, Who cannot be comprehended. Yet He makes Himself known to us.

When we remember that He is, according to I Timothy 6:16, the one no man has seen, nor can see, pure Spirit and forever invisible to our eyes, then we realize that revelation is a miracle. That He who is so great should speak in human language and in a way that the simplest of us can understand is almost unbelievable. John Calvin spoke of God "lisping" to us as a parent lisps to his little child.

Part of that miracle is His making Himself known to sinners who have closed their minds and hearts to Him. There we see the connection between the miracle of revelation and the miracle of grace and realize that revelation has its purpose in the salvation of God's people.

All this means is that we cannot know Him without His revelation – without God making Himself known. Feelings are not the way to know God: “I feel some sort of presence.” Thinking is not the way: “I can prove to you that there is a god.” All that kind of thing is just imagination and not truth.

The Bible tells us that God makes Himself known in the creation and in our consciences, but even that is not enough to help us know God as a friend and Savior. His revelation in our conscience and in creation is only a revelation of His power, anger and the fact that He is God, as Romans 1:18-20 teaches: “For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men, who hold the truth in unrighteousness; Because that which may be known of God is manifest in them; for God hath shewed it unto them. For the invisible things of him from the creation of the world are clearly seen, being understood by the things that are made, even his eternal power and Godhead; so that they are without excuse.”

We need His Word, the Bible, to know Him as a Friend. That Word, read and preached must change our minds and hearts before we are able to know and love Him. Then He makes Himself known as the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, and in Jesus as our Savior. When that happens it is the most wonderful thing ever: “And this is life eternal, that they might know thee the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom thou hast sent.”

Have you read His Word? Do you know Him? Has He made Himself known to you? May God grant that blessing to you and to many.
